Huawei's really starting to make a splash in the American smartphone market, breaking into the Big Four with the launch of the T-Mobile Comet not long ago -- but it's the budget regionals where these guys might have a chance to dominate. MetroPCS has taken a cue from archrival Cricket in launching Huawei's Ascend today, offering a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, and microSD memory expansion to 16GB atop Android 2.1. The $179 they're asking seems a bit steep for the specs until you remember that MetroPCS offers its hardware contract-free -- and it'll save you a dime or two over the carrier's name-brand Android offering, the Optimus M from LG. It's available today; follow the break for the full press release.

AOL -- who happens to own Download Squad and Switched -- has been all over Google Chrome this year. They've already released a handful of extensions like Lifestream, SHOUTcast, and Offsite for Chrome and now they're offering up their first app in the Chrome Web Store.

Harkening back to days of yore, it's You've Got News. Unlike the New York Times app Seb showed you, You've Got News is a locally installed app -- not a link to a remotely hosted Web site. The app actually feels a bit like reading the newspaper: use your left and right arrow keys to flip through the main sections and your up and down keys to peruse a section's individual pages. You can also click on background pages in the margins to bring them into focus.

saunavihtavortex

First off, Saunavihta Vortex is pretty creepy. I mean, it's not really kid-friendly. But having said that, it's can be lots of fun for teens and adults.

Basically, you control the fate of a ragdoll. You need to somehow get the ragdoll into a flaming pit. When the ragdoll gets there and stays there for three seconds, you pass the level.

To get the doll there, you need to launch, batter and roll it across the level in all sorts of creative ways. The level is composed of contraptions built of white and black bars. The white bars disappear when you click them. So if you have a "swing" that stays put thanks to a delicate balance between a white bar and a black bar, as soon as the white bar goes, that swing is going to move.

You can zoom out using SPACE to see more of the level; by default, you're zoomed in quite close. The closer zoom level is useful for getting the timing right when it's important, and zooming out helps you figure out the general direction.

A beautiful game with a unique atmosphere.

XtremeMac has been crankin' out iPod docks for years, and now former CEO Gary Bart has launched Stem Innovation, a company dedicated exclusively to iOS accessories. For its first trick, Bart and company have introduced TimeCommand which (as its name implies) goes beyond the whole dock thing and comes across as a control station for the bedroom. Among its many charms are iPhone / iPod / iPad compatibility, the ability to control your mood lighting (including a dimmer and a "wake by light" feature), battery backup (don't miss work, even if the power goes out), an app with Internet Radio playback, and something called Stem:Sonic iQ digital signal processing. Available now at the Apple store for $100.

Now that my Android device is cluttered with apps and games, I figured it was time to tidy up my home screen -- and Go Launcher is up to the task. It's a highly customizable home replacement which supports app folders (like iOS), and widgets, multiple pages, and a huge number of user-configurable settings.

Tap the grid icon and Go displays all your apps in a paged 4x4 grid -- which you can switch to 5x4 or 5x5. There's also a landscape mode, though it's disabled by default. Simply pop in a checkmark in the operation settings screen to enable rotation. Screen switching is lightning fast, and Android's built-in search is there to respond to your queries. Go Launcher even offers basic gesture support and can do everything from opening settings screens to launching your favorite app with the flick of a finger.

Find the QR Code after the jump!

You have to go to great lengths these days to distinguish your iPod dock from the teeming horde, but that's exactly what Speakal did here. To state the obvious, it's a pig, wearing sunglasses, and filled with stereo components. The beast has four-watt stereo drivers for eyes, a down-firing 15 watt subwoofer in the belly, controls in the snout, and ports in the tail region. There's also an internal lithium ion battery good for up to eight untethered hours on a charge. We're not sure what would possess you to buy the hog, especially for its $150 asking price, but it could be just the item you've been looking for to bolster your eccentric reputation... or ward off particularly annoyed fowl.

Microsoft (and just about every other big computing company) is bullish on the cloud, and the Redmond company announced a massive migration win yesterday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be moving around 120,000 users to Microsoft Online Services.

It's a nice feather in the cap of Microsoft, which only earlier this month received its Authorization to Operate from the Fed. Microsoft V.P. Curt Kolcun believes the USDA deal will get the ball rolling, saying "Nearly every federal agency trusts their productivity needs to Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SharePoint today." He continued, "From a momentum perspective, I think this announcement is going to be a phenomenal catalyst to drive more interest from the federal CIO community to think about moving their full messaging suite applications to the cloud with Microsoft."

... And so the battle for the cloud continues. Your move, Google!

FM transmitters may not usually be much to look at, but iKit has bucked that trend somewhat with its new AutoCon unit, which packs some illuminated touchscreen controls into a sleek, glossy black enclosure. You'll also naturally get a 3.5mm cable to accommodate the phone or MP3 player of your choice, along with a handsfree function, and a USB car charger to keep the device itself (or your other USB devices) powered at all times. Head on past the break for the complete press release, and look for this one to set you back $45.

NOVELL NETWORK APPLIANCE NETGEAR

It was bound to happen sooner or later: an unholy marriage between an iPhone (or second gen or later iPod touch) and a radar detector. As seems most fitting, the peeps at Cobra are behind this one, and we must say that if this is your thing, the premise is pretty interesting: the handset, running a free app from the company, connects to the iCobra fuzz buster via Bluetooth and alerts the driver to things like cameras, commonly identified speed traps, rough intersections, and more. Suggested retail is $170, but we've seen it making the rounds for the $100 mark. Race your way to your favorite e-tailer to see for yourself.

blosics2levelpack

When Lee reviewed the original Blosics time-waster back in 2009, he concluded the review with the words "I just wish there were more levels, but I'll be heading back for another round."

Well, it seems like Lee's wish has been granted, with the Blosics 2 Level Pack. Gameplay is exactly like the original: You shoot cannon balls out of a certain area of the screen, trying to make a tower of bricks topple. When the bricks fall into the abyss you gain points, but every ball you shoot also costs you points. You also have four different balls sizes - the larger the ball, the more expensive (and powerful) it is. It comes down to figuring the most effective trajectory and tactic for toppling the tower.

The are 30 user-generated levels, and it's very addictive. I made it all the way to level 15 before the need to perform some actual work caught up with me. Very engaging.

Weta Workshop is filled with engineers, and that means they solve problems. Practical problems. For instance, how Valve Software is going to keep its throng of Team Fortress 2 players in awe. The answer? Use a gun. Like this heavy-caliber, tripod-mounted, fastidiously crafted life-size reproduction of The Engineer's level 1 Sentry Gun, which features a bona fide motion sensor for tracking whosoever is fool enough to venture into Valve's geektastic lobby in Bellevue, Washington and touch the darn thing. We can think of a few souls offhand. Video after the break.
